Black Friday Buying Guide: How to Choose the Right PC, Laptop or Mini PC in 2025 (and Avoid the Traps)

Updated: 14 hours ago

Every November, South Africans rush online, adding laptops, PCs, and tech gadgets to their carts faster than you can say "limited stock. It’s that time of year again — Black Friday — where deals seem too good to be true, and sometimes, they are.

At BuySave, we’ve seen this story play out year after year: people get swept up in the hype, buy a “bargain,” and a few months later, regret the purchase. Either the laptop is painfully slow, the desktop can’t handle basic multitasking, or support becomes a nightmare when something goes wrong.

That’s why this year, we’re doing something different. This isn’t another “Top 10 Black Friday Deals” post — it’s your complete buying guide to help you make smart choices. Because the best deal isn’t always the cheapest one — it’s the one that lasts, performs, and is backed by real people who care (that’s us).

Why You Shouldn’t Just Buy for the Price Tag

Black Friday deals are designed to trigger one thing: excitement. The giant “50% OFF” banners, ticking timers, and bold “Today Only” labels make you feel like you’ll lose out if you don’t click Buy Now. But here’s the thing: not all deals are deals.

Many big retailers quietly clear out old, underpowered stock that has been sitting for months — sometimes years. The specs might look okay on paper, but in practice, they’ll leave you frustrated.Let’s be honest — what’s the point of saving R2,000 today if you end up needing to replace the PC in a year?

At BuySave, we focus on value, not hype. That means making sure that every PC, laptop, or mini PC you buy can handle what’s coming in 2026 and beyond — not just what’s barely working today. Of course we are also not perfect and make mistakes or offer similar deals, but, its because we have to offer what the market wants. We do howevere select what we sell much better than a much large store that lists everything under the sun.

Why 4GB or 8GB of RAM Is Simply Not Enough Anymore

Let’s start with one of the biggest mistakes buyers make during Black Friday: thinking that 4GB or even 8GB of RAM is “enough.”

Yes, Windows 11 technically runs on 4GB of RAM. But “runs” is not the same as runs well. Once you open a few browser tabs, launch a video meeting, or update software in the background, that system will crawl. You’ll be watching the spinning blue circle more than your actual work.

Even 8GB, which was once standard, is quickly becoming a bottleneck. Apps like Chrome, Edge, and Microsoft Teams eat memory like it’s free. And with Windows 12 expected to roll out by end 2026, system requirements are only going up — not down.

You also need to check if the laptop or desktop or even mini pc allows for upgrades. A recent laptop deal we thought we going to be great until we had to dig deeper and noticed that you cannot upgrade the ram from 8GB. So another story of great price, great specs but poor future.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

RAM Size

Performance Reality (2025/2026)

4GB

Only suitable for basic web browsing. Expect lag with updates and multitasking.

8GB

Okay for light work, but struggles with multiple tabs, video editing, or gaming.

16GB

The new sweet spot for modern computing — smooth, future-proof, multitask-ready.

32GB+

Great for gamers, designers, and power users. Future-proof for 5+ years.

At BuySave, we don’t even recommend or sell 4GB anymore. Most of our Mini PCs, desktops, and laptops start at 16GB RAM, because we believe performance and peace of mind are part of a good deal — not optional extras.

The Hidden Tricks in Deal Descriptions

Another major trap during Black Friday is vague or misleading specifications. You’ll see hundreds of ads claiming “Ryzen 5 Laptop” or “Intel Celeron Desktop” — but those titles alone mean almost nothing without context.

Here’s what to watch out for:

1. Celeron with No Model Number

If the deal just says “Intel Celeron” and doesn’t mention the exact model (like N4020, N95, or N150), that’s a red flag.

Why? Because Intel has released dozens of Celeron chips over the years — some of them more than a decade old. A 2021 Celeron N4500 performs vastly differently from a 2016 Celeron N3060.

Many “deal” laptops being sold this Black Friday still ship with these older, underpowered processors — good enough for opening Word, but not much more.

2. Ryzen 3 or Ryzen 5, But Which Generation?

AMD’s Ryzen lineup is powerful — but not all Ryzen chips are created equal.A Ryzen 5 2500U (1st Gen) can’t hold a candle to a Ryzen 5 5500U (5th Gen) or Ryzen 5 7530U (7th Gen), even though they sound similar.

If a deal doesn’t mention the generation or model number — be cautious. Ask questions. The difference between two Ryzen 5s could mean twice the speed, better graphics, and years more relevance. We always mention these important specs in our product listings.

3. SSD Size with No Mention of Type

You’ll see offers like “256GB SSD included” — sounds good, right? But is it a SATA SSD or an NVMe SSD? NVMe drives are up to 5x faster, and most new Mini PCs (including ours) use NVMe as standard.

If the deal doesn’t specify, assume it’s the slower one.

4. No Mention of Windows Version

Some “cheap” PCs are still loaded with outdated or unlicensed versions of Windows. That’s not just risky — it’s a headache when updates fail or drivers stop working. At BuySave, every device comes preinstalled with genuine Windows 11 Home or Pro — activated, updated, and ready to go. Unless you specifically buy a barebone for something like a Chrome or Linux Operating system.

The Importance of Real Customer Support

You know what’s worse than buying a slow PC? Buying a slow PC and then waiting five days for someone to reply to your support email.

We’ve heard countless horror stories:

  • “The laptop I bought on Black Friday came faulty, and I had to deal with three different support agents before someone helped me.”

  • “The courier damaged my desktop and the retailer wouldn’t take responsibility.”

  • “I was told to contact the manufacturer directly. They never replied.”

That’s not good enough.

At BuySave, we do things differently. When you buy from us, you’re not just getting a device — you’re getting direct access to a real person who owns the company who cares about getting you sorted quickly.

We pride ourselves on local South African support — no call-centre ping-pong, no generic “please wait 48 hours” emails. If there’s an issue, we fix it fast.

And because we’re small enough to care, yet experienced enough to handle large volumes, our after-sales service is what truly makes the difference. A deal that saves you R500 but costs you days of downtime is not a deal — it’s a disaster.

We also provide a PC Care+ package with all our Mini PCs so you can send it to us for a check up or speed up during the first year after purchase for FREE. Yes we care!

What to Check Before Clicking “Buy Now”

Before you hit that tempting Buy Now button, take a moment to check these key factors:

✅ 1. Processor Generation & Speed

  • Always check the exact model — e.g., Intel i5-1235U, AMD Ryzen 5 5500U, etc.

  • Look for at least 11th Gen Intel or 5th Gen Ryzen for a balance of speed and efficiency.

✅ 2. RAM & Storage

  • Minimum 16GB RAM for longevity. You can choose 8GB but make sure the PC you buy can be upgraded to 16 or more GB of ram.

  • SSD storage (preferably NVMe). Avoid 128GB SSDs — they fill up quickly.

✅ 3. Ports & Connectivity

  • Make sure it has USB 3.0, HDMI, and at least one Type-C port.

  • Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0+ are the modern standard.

✅ 4. Build Quality & Brand Reliability

  • Unknown brands can be a gamble unless they’re backed by solid warranties or sold through reputable resellers like BuySave.

✅ 5. Warranty & Support

  • Ensure there’s at least a 1-year warranty, ideally with local service or return support.

  • Read reviews about after-sales responsiveness before buying.

The Black Friday Buzzwords That Should Make You Pause

Retailers love certain phrases — because they sound impressive but don’t actually mean much. Here’s a quick translation guide:

Deal Wording

What It Might Really Mean

“Up to 50% Off”

Only one product in the range is discounted that much. The rest are 5–10% off.

“From R4,999”

That price applies to the weakest spec in the range — upgrades cost much more.

“Fast Performance”

Vague. Check processor generation and RAM before believing it.

“Limited Stock”

Common urgency tactic. Some listings rotate the same stock to fake scarcity.

“Free Windows Installed”

Can mean non-genuine or trial Windows. Genuine copies cost extra.

“Intel Inside”

Could be anything from a modern i7 to an ancient Celeron. Always check the model.

When in doubt, research the model number — or simply message us at BuySave. We’ll tell you straight whether it’s worth it or not, even if you’re buying elsewhere.

Thinking Beyond the Deal: Battery Life, Noise & Energy Use

Here’s something most deal hunters overlook — efficiency. A PC or laptop that uses less power, runs silently, and stays cool can save you frustration (and money) long after Black Friday.

Mini PCs, for instance, have become a smart choice for this reason. They’re compact, quiet, and sip electricity — perfect for both home offices and small businesses.Compared to bulky desktops, they consume up to 70% less power, while offering the same everyday performance.

That’s why we always say: Mini PC. Maxi Power. It’s not just a tagline — it’s a reality that smart buyers are catching onto.

Plan for the Future — Not Just Today’s Needs

Before buying, think about what you’ll be doing a year or two from now. Do you plan to work remotely? Edit videos? Stream more content? Use AI tools?

If yes, that budget 4GB laptop won’t cut it. Spend a little more now on performance and you’ll thank yourself later. Tech is evolving faster than ever — AI integration, larger operating systems, and 4K media are now the norm.Future-proofing means buying something that won’t need replacing next year.

That’s why we recommend:

  • Ryzen 5 / Intel i5 or higher

  • 16GB RAM minimum

  • NVMe SSD storage

  • Windows 11 Pro

  • Support from a local, trusted retailer who concetrates on all things computers and not all things.

After the Purchase: Keeping Your PC Running Smoothly

Buying the right PC is only half the journey — maintaining it matters just as much. That’s why BuySave created PC Care+, our in-house annual service designed to:

  • Clean out dust and refresh thermal paste

  • Run full performance diagnostics

  • Optimize software and remove bloatware

  • Check your drive health and update firmware

You can send in your Mini PC, desktop, or laptop once a year — and we’ll keep it running like new.Think of it as a health check for your tech, just like a car service.

  • Stock that’s actually available

Because when you buy smart, you save more than just money — you save time, headaches, and disappointment.

Final Thoughts: Don’t Let Black Friday Fool You

Black Friday should be about finding real value — not flashy markdowns on outdated tech. Before you click “buy,” ask yourself:

  • Will this PC still perform in 2026 or even 2027?

  • Can I upgrade it if needed?

  • Will I get real support if something goes wrong?

If the answer is “no” to any of those, it’s not a deal — it’s a trap.

At BuySave, we’re here to help you cut through the noise and buy with confidence. So this Black Friday, skip the hype and choose smarter tech that lasts.
